The shift: one answer instead of ten links
When someone asks ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or Google for "the best emergency plumber near me," they rarely get a list of ten websites. They get a short answer that names one to three businesses and shows a few sources. Being one of those names is the new first page.
That answer is assembled from pages the assistant could read and trust. If your site blocks its crawler, buries your hours inside an image or never says plainly what you do and where, you are simply not in the pool of candidates.
How assistants choose who to mention
Every provider works differently, but the pattern is consistent:
- Retrieval. The assistant searches its index or the live web for pages relevant to the question. Pages it is not allowed to crawl are invisible here.
- Understanding. It extracts facts: who you are, what you offer, where, when and for how much. Structured data and clear writing make this reliable.
- Trust. It cross-checks those facts against other sources such as your Google Business Profile, reviews and directories. Consistent details across the web win.
- Answering. It writes a response and cites the sources that gave it the cleanest, most specific answer.
The five layers you control
| Layer | What it means | Free tool |
|---|---|---|
| Crawler access | AI search crawlers are allowed in robots.txt and nothing blocks them | robots.txt Builder |
| AI files | llms.txt and a sitemap tell machines what matters | llms.txt Generator |
| Structured data | JSON-LD states your name, location, hours and services as facts | Schema Generator |
| Answer-ready content | Headings phrased as questions, direct answers, real specifics | Answer Readiness Grader |
| Technical trust | HTTPS, fast responses, mobile-first pages | AI Visibility Scanner |
Is AEO different from SEO?
AEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it. Google rankings still feed AI Overviews, and Bing results feed ChatGPT search and Copilot, so classic SEO remains the foundation. AEO adds three things SEO often ignores: explicit AI crawler permissions, files written for language models, and content shaped as quotable answers.
A useful test: could an assistant answer "what do you do, where, and how do I book" using only one paragraph of your homepage? If not, start there.
Where to start this week
- Run a free AI visibility scan and save the report link.
- Fix anything marked high impact first. It is usually crawler access or missing structured data.
- Publish an llms.txt and a sitemap.
- Rewrite your homepage intro as a direct answer, then check it with the Answer Readiness Grader.
- Rescan and compare. The report shows exactly how many points each fix earned.
